Lincoln Financial Foundation Supports Workforce Education, Training
Workforce and Economic Development Grants Awarded to Seven Nonprofits

Hartford, Conn., January 31, 2011 — Grants from Lincoln Financial Foundation are helping local nonprofit agencies provide adult education and job training for Hartford's workforce. Lincoln Foundation recently awarded $79,400 in workforce and economic development grants to seven local nonprofits.

Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford received $15,000 to meet the growing demand for technology-based instruction. The grant will help create a more expansive and intensive training program for volunteer instructors in Literacy Volunteers' educational technology lab. The volunteers will teach students basic computer skills, how to search and apply for a job online, and how to search the internet for health, consumer, citizenship, educational and other resources.

Dress for Success Hartford will use a $12,000 grant to support its employment retention programs for women. The programs move women toward self-sufficiency and achieving professional goals by helping them acquire appropriate attire and by providing career guidance, educational resources and support. Dress for Success also provides a professional women's group and a career center that emphasize workplace communication and culture, financial literacy, health and wellness and the written and unwritten rules found in the workplace.

A $10,000 grant to Hartford Public Library will allow the library to expand its adult education resources to include Graduate Equivalency Degree preparation and college math. The library will use a combination of proven strategies, including computer-assisted instruction, circulating self-study textbooks and media and flexible tutoring hours.

Other organizations receiving grants:

  • $12,400 to Knox Parks Foundation for the Americorps Green Crew program that provides green jobs training and life skills experience to Hartford youth.
  • $10,000 to Billings Forge Community Works for Job Training @ The Kitchen, a program that trains low-income individuals to work in fine dining establishments.
  • $10,000 to HART for the Home Ownership Made Easy (HOME) program, which provides financial education, information and support to low- and moderate-income families purchasing a home.
  • $10,000 to Jubilee House for the Esperanza Academic Center, where low- to moderate-income adults acquire writing, math, computer literacy, financial literacy and workplace training to succeed in college and the workplace.
