Lincoln Financial Foundation Expands Educational Opportunity
$544,000 in Education Grants Awarded

Greensboro, NC., July 5, 2013 — Lincoln Financial Foundation is helping to strengthen educational programming in Guilford County through $544,000 in recent grants to 14 local nonprofit agencies, several of which focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum. The grants are a portion of $1.8 million in charitable funds Lincoln Foundation has allocated for Greensboro in 2013.

Lincoln Foundation has committed $300,000 over three years to the YMCA of Greensboro for its Black/Latino Achievers, Bright Beginnings and Lincoln Financial Education and Outreach programs. The Black/Latino Achievers program educates and exposes youth in grades 8-12 to a variety of careers and encourages students to further their post-secondary education. The program's objective is to help students and their parents prepare for and access post-secondary education, careers and citizenship skills through collaboration with many organizations. Bright Beginnings provides at-risk children in grades K-12 with school supplies and clothes to prepare for academic success in the upcoming school year. Each child receives a book bag, school supplies and school clothes (including uniforms where required) just before school starts in August. The Lincoln Financial Education and Outreach program provides children from preschool through grade 12 with program space, furnishings and equipment needed for high-quality programming to serve at-risk students, preparing them for academic success through daycare, preschool, after-school, summer learning, teen leadership and other educational activities that reinforce in-school learning.

Other education grants awarded include:

  • $40,000 to North Carolina A&T University to support programming that ensures incoming university students have the tools necessary to be successful within the college culture.
  • $40,000 to UNCG Excellence Foundation to support the UNCG Guarantee Program, a mentoring program for lower-income students to increase college graduation rates, and "IT is for Girls" summer camps and school year programming, which introduces middle and high school-aged girls to information technology (IT) education opportunities, exposure to IT careers and hands-on learning experiences.
