Dr. John Greene, vice president of Lincoln Life Medical Underwriting, explains the importance of buying life insurance.

What influences policy premiums?

The primary factors of your premium are age, gender, the amount and type of coverage you’d like to purchase, and your use of tobacco products. An individual’s lifestyle choices, health-related issues and family history of medical problems are also taken into consideration.

Based on all this information, insurance companies group potential policyholders into general risk categories, or underwriting classes.

Insurance underwriting classes

Lincoln has five underwriting classes and other insurers have similar classifications.

Preferred plus nontobacco

This is the best risk classification. Individuals in this category have not used any form of tobacco or nicotine in the past 36 months, except for an occasional cigar. Those who fall within this category can expect to have the lowest premiums to pay.

Preferred nontobacco

Individuals who have exceptional health and have not used any form of tobacco or nicotine in the past 24 months, except for an occasional cigar, fall into this category.

Standard nontobacco

This class is for those who have an average life expectancy and do not meet preferred criteria.

Preferred tobacco

This is similar to the preferred nontobacco category, but individuals who fall in this class meet all the preferred criteria and have smoked cigarettes within the past 12 months.

Standard tobacco

This is similar to the standard nontobacco category, but individuals who fall in this class have smoked cigarettes within the past 12 months.
