Frequently asked questions
Q: Can I use the tool on my iPad? iPhone? Or just a computer?
A: The tool is mobile friendly, so feel free to use it on the device of your choice.
Q: What can I expect from using this tool?
A: By making selections in the first three steps of the tool, we’ll be able to offer you a customized set of financial planning considerations. At the end of the experience, you’ll be able to review and save them in a PDF, so you can print them out or email them to yourself, a family member or your financial advisor. We also provide links to related topic articles that you can read whenever you like!
Q: Will any of my personal data be collected or shared?
A: Definitely not. This tool is for your personal use only, and Lincoln Financial is not collecting your personal data. Even when you download your customized output as a PDF, we are not storing a copy. The tool is for your personal use exclusively. During your session, your selections are held in a local session cookie on your computer so you can make changes you like without having to reselect every checkbox or radio button. This data is not kept after the session.
Q: Can I make changes? For example, can I come back later and revise my selections or re-output my PDF?
A: Yes. Since we are not storing any of your data, if you want to revise anything in a future session, you will need to re-enter your selections. You can revise any response made during your current session by clicking the back button. From there, you can step forward through to the end and see your custom list of financial planning considerations.
Q: After I’m done, what do I do next?
A: It’s entirely up to you! You can follow up on the individual items yourself, or with a family member or financial advisor. You can use the financial planning considerations to start an informed conversation and go from there. If you’d like help finding an advisor, you can start by browsing our list here.
Q: What do I do with my PDF output?
A: Once you’ve completed the checklist, you can download and save the PDF to review later, or email it to yourself, a family member or a financial advisor. All the article links in the PDF are clickable, so you can learn more about topics of interest.
Q: Do I have to follow the advice in my personalized recommendations?
A: Absolutely not. The information you’ll find in the output is intended as a good starting point for reflection, conversation and further exploration. You’re in charge, and we want to provide insights and considerations to explore on your financial planning journey.
Q: Can I fill out the tool for someone else?
A: Of course! If you want to complete the checklist for someone else, you can step through the tool if you know enough information around their financial planning priorities and who they’re responsible for. You can then share the output with them to help give them a sense of where they might want to focus their attention.
Q: What if I don’t know the answer to something, or get something wrong?
A: Even if you estimate or guess on some of your inputs, most of the information should still be relevant. Try to have your basic information, such as when you anticipate you’ll retire. If you’re not sure when you’re retiring, you can select “not sure”. If you make an error and need to adjust something, you can use the back button to revise a selection and then step forward throughout the tool.
