About Lincoln's Legacy

When Lincoln Financial adopted President Abraham Lincoln's name in 1905, we also adopted his ideals. We launched Lincoln's Legacy, a special initiative that celebrates the 150th anniversaries of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment, to help inspire others.

Inspiring the hopes and dreams of America’s youth

As the only company with permission from Robert Todd Lincoln to use his father's name and image, Lincoln Financial has a strong connection to its namesake. The Lincoln's Legacy initiative is designed to educate and inspire the hopes and dreams of children and young adults through:

  • Oral histories. Our goal is to record and collect a variety of celebrity interviews, where people reflect on where they came from and what led to their success. What could be more inspirational for today's youth than hearing first-hand how one of their idols has achieved the American dream?
  • Lincoln's Legacy Award. During each year of Lincoln's Legacy, we're awarding $50,000 to an education-focused nonprofit organization. In this competition, our online community votes on the finalists to choose the winner.
  • Legacy events. One of our first events was an unveiling of an original signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation at the National Urban League’s annual meeting in Philadelphia in 2013.

Profiles in Diversity Journal, which focuses on diversity/inclusion in business, military/government, nonprofit and higher education settings, highlighted Lincoln's Legacy initiative in its May/June 2014 issue.
